Week 8 // Prepping My Process Essay

At first, I wasn't sure how I wanted my genre translation project to go. The first thing I had to do was figure out what topic I would research, which was difficult to pick. The clustering exercise helped me isolate two possible topics to pick from, which then helped me select bioluminescence in marine animals as my research topic. The next step was to decide which genre I would translate my article into. This was another hard decision, but I ultimately chose the genre of children's books, because I felt that it would be the best fit for my topic (while also being fun to do). I then had to search for a scholarly article, which wasn't too hard considering the vast amount of research that's been conducted on the subject. The group project helped me understand the process that would need to be done in the individual translation project in different ways, like how to identify conventions of different sources and how to efficiently sort information from the text.

I started my writing process by identifying what my children's book would be about. This was easy since I based it off the topic of the article I chose, which was the different types of bioluminescent sea organisms and their impacts on ocean ecosystems. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to convey the paper's information in a way that fits the children's book genre, especially since the paper was scientific and detailed in nature. Some of the conventions that I needed to follow were easy-to-understand sentences, simpler language, the use of pictures/illustrations, and a lower page count. I decided that my children's book would be a slightly advanced picture book, one that is designed for elementary school children that have a basic understanding of science. This was much different than the intended audience of the article, which are most likely educated individuals interested in research about bioluminescence and its role in the ocean.

My group project members played a part in my own project, as I was able to take what I learned in the group process and apply it to my own genre translation. My peer reviewer, Bella, also did a phenomenal job of pointing out which parts of my project could be improved, such as the fact that the argument in my piece could be tweaked to reflect on the scholarly article's focus more accurately.

  1. Hi Aliyah! I am so excited to see how your translation turns out. I have been to the beach countless times just to see the bioluminescence. One time we went and because it had washed up on the shore, when we were walking down the beach our foot prints were lighting up! It was literally like someone had sprinkled pixie dust all over the sand.

    A children’s book would be an ideal translation for this. Yes, the scientific words and concepts might be a little hard to translate and for kids to understand but I know you can do it! Maybe you can create a word to refer to the bioluminescence instead of the actual word which is quite long and difficult to read. Besides that, reading about glowing water would be extremely captivating for kids.

    The conventions you mentioned are really important! As long as you stick to the those I think your translation will be very successful. This was such a creative idea and I can not believe no one else thought of it (that I have seen thus far). I hope you have gotten to see the bioluminescence as well :) Great work!

5/14 Brainstorming Activity: Clustering

For this activity, I chose clustering over cubing. This was because I initially didn't know what topics I wanted to do my genre translation project on, which made it hard to complete the cubing exercise successfully. I started clustering by first looking at the possible ideas I wanted to explore further. The first topic I came up with was bioluminescence in deep sea fish. Since I enjoy biology and science in general, I thought that this would be a good possible topic. I then found a scholarly article discussing the causes and effects of the bioluminescence, which I categorized as the biological components and the effects on the ocean's ecosystem. The second topic I thought of was the effects that music can have on the brain. Once again, I searched for a scholarly article and found one that discussed the various effects that music can have, along with the potentials of music therapy.
